In a bid to further advance automation and improve operational efficiency, Amazon has partnered with Agility Robotics to introduce humanoid robots into their warehouse facilities. The collaboration aims to integrate Agility Robotics’ Digit robots into Amazon’s workforce to assist employees with repetitive tasks, ultimately streamlining operations.
Digit robots, standing at 5.7 ft (175 cm) tall, possess agile and grasshopper-like legs that enable them to crouch and lift items off the floor, reaching heights of up to six feet. These robots are capable of lifting packages weighing up to 35 lb (16 kg) and can navigate in various directions, handle stairs, uneven terrain, and walk while in a crouched position.
By introducing Digit robots to its workforce, Amazon aims to enhance collaboration between human workers and robot assistants. The essential role of the robots will be to automate the process of recycling empty totes that no longer contain inventory. This collaboration is not intended to replace human workers; instead, it aims to optimize their productivity by taking over repetitive tasks.
Agility Robotics, an Amazon-backed tech company, has been at the forefront of developing humanoid robots like Digit. The success of Digit’s earlier trials in partnership with Ford for autonomous package delivery and its deployment at a fulfillment warehouse for the women’s wear brand, Spanx, showcased the potential of these robots in real-world applications.
While Digit is currently focused on tasks requiring strength and agility, advancements in fine motor skills may not be far off. Other companies, such as Sanctuary AI and Boston Dynamics, are exploring the integration of fast and skillful hydraulic hands with the locomotion capabilities of robots like Digit, leading to even more sophisticated automation possibilities.
To meet the increasing demand for humanoid robots like Digit, Agility Robotics is constructing a dedicated manufacturing plant known as the “RoboFab” facility in Salem, Oregon. With a capacity to produce over 10,000 Digit robots annually, this facility will play a crucial role in scaling up production to cater to the needs of various industries.
The introduction of Agility Robotics’ Digit robots at Amazon facilities marks a significant milestone in the field of warehouse automation. By harnessing the unique capabilities of humanoid robots and combining them with human expertise, Amazon aims to enhance operational efficiency and deliver a more seamless customer experience.
