LG Energy Solution has entered into an exclusive agreement to supply cylindrical batteries to Aptera Motors, a solar electric vehicle manufacturer. This partnership, formalized at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, involves a three-party Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with CTNS, a battery module and pack producer, marking a significant step in sustainable automotive innovation.

The agreement stipulates that LG Energy will provide 2,170 cylindrical battery cells exclusively to Aptera from 2025 to 2031. These batteries will power Aptera’s solar EV, designed to enter the U.S. market in 2025. The vehicle aims to optimize energy efficiency with a design that reduces air resistance, offering a driving range of 643 km (400 miles) per charge. Its solar panels can provide up to 64 km (40 miles) of power daily, amounting to over 16,093 km (10,000 miles) annually. Constructed with recyclable materials, the vehicle’s lightweight carbon fiber body and no-welding assembly enhance cost and production efficiency. LG Energy’s batteries, featuring advanced NCMA cathodes and Safety Reinforced Separators, promise enhanced performance and safety.

This collaboration aligns with growing trends in the automotive industry towards sustainable and energy-efficient transport solutions. As the demand for eco-friendly vehicles rises, partnerships like this highlight the shift towards innovative battery technologies. Experts note that such developments are crucial as the industry moves towards reducing dependence on fossil fuels and minimizing environmental impact.

Looking ahead, LG Energy’s strategic focus on mass-producing the 46-series batteries by 2026 at its Queen Creek, Arizona facility, underscores its commitment to enhancing product competitiveness. This venture could significantly influence the sustainable transportation sector, paving the way for broader adoption of solar electric vehicles.
