The Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) has unveiled an enhanced version of its hydraulic quadruped robot, HyQReal, equipped with dual-arm telepresence capabilities. This advancement, revealed in February 2025, is designed to perform complex tasks in dangerous environments, safeguarding human operators from potential hazards.

HyQReal, weighing 140 kilograms, now features two massive arms capable of lifting up to 5 kg each. The robot’s hydraulic system provides 4 kilowatts of power, enabling it to function dynamically and carry significant payloads. IIT’s innovation focuses on extending human capabilities through a teleoperation system that allows operators to control the robot remotely, even in hazardous or unstructured settings.

Utilizing a powerful hydraulic system, HyQReal demonstrates enhanced mobility and stability. The robot’s aluminum and Kevlar structure provides durability, while its telepresence system offers haptic feedback and a broad workspace for operators. The development emphasizes the importance of teleoperation systems that optimize user experience by minimizing cognitive burden and enhancing situational awareness.

HyQReal’s design reflects a growing trend in robotics toward creating machines capable of operating in environments unsuitable for humans. This aligns with global efforts to improve safety across various industries through automation.
