Isuzu Motors has unveiled plans for a groundbreaking $280 million manufacturing facility in Piedmont, South Carolina. Slated for completion by 2027, the factory aims to enhance Isuzu’s North American commercial vehicle supply chain, creating 700 jobs and producing 50,000 vehicles annually by 2030.

The expansive 93,000-square-meter plant will occupy a 750,000-square-meter site in Greenville County, allowing for on-site storage of all completed trucks. The facility will introduce a flexible production system capable of manufacturing various models, including BEV and gas variants of Isuzu’s N-series and diesel F-series trucks. Notably, the production line will operate without conveyors or pits, focusing on scalability and flexibility. Automated systems will ensure quality control, minimizing errors and ensuring parts traceability.

Isuzu’s investment aligns with the growing global commercial EV market, projected to expand from $60.48 billion in 2024 to $248.2 billion by 2030, largely driven by logistics sector demand. In North America since 1984, Isuzu’s record sales last fiscal year underscore the region’s importance to the company, prompting this strategic expansion. The move is part of the ‘Isuzu Transformation’ strategy, targeting growth through autonomous driving, connected services, and carbon-neutral solutions.

The South Carolina Coordinating Council for Economic Development has supported the project with a $7 million grant for site preparation and construction. This investment underscores the state’s commitment to fostering economic growth and job creation in Greenville County, further solidifying its role in the automotive industry landscape.

As Isuzu embarks on this ambitious project, it signals a significant shift towards advanced manufacturing practices and a commitment to sustainable growth. The new facility not only bolsters Isuzu’s presence in North America but also positions the company to capitalize on the burgeoning commercial EV market, paving the way for future innovations.
