On February 24, 2025, Mercedes-Benz commenced road tests of a groundbreaking lithium-metal solid-state battery, developed in collaboration with Factorial Energy. The tests mark the first deployment of this advanced battery technology in a vehicle, promising to revolutionize electric mobility with enhanced efficiency and range.
Mercedes-Benz, leveraging expertise from both its High Performance Powertrains division and the Center of Competence for Battery Systems, has integrated a prototype solid-state battery into an EQS model. This innovative battery system, designed using Formula 1 technology, promises a 25% increase in driving range while maintaining similar weight and size as traditional batteries. Initial laboratory tests conducted in Stuttgart laid the groundwork for the February 2025 road tests, signifying a major step forward in sustainable automotive technology.
Solid-state batteries, which use solid electrolytes, are viewed as a game-changer for electric vehicles due to their higher energy density and improved safety over conventional lithium-ion batteries. By enabling lithium-metal anodes, these batteries may significantly extend vehicle ranges. Mercedes-Benz’s efforts align with a broader industry trend toward sustainable and electric mobility solutions. Experts highlight that achieving a gravimetric energy density of up to 450 Wh/kg could set new performance benchmarks in the automotive sector.
Factorial Energy CEO Siyu Huang emphasized the collaboration’s success in bringing solid-state technology from concept to practical application, marking a milestone for electric vehicles. Markus Schäfer, Chief Technology Officer at Mercedes-Benz, noted the strategic importance of these developments in advancing the company’s commitment to innovation and environmental sustainability.
As Mercedes-Benz continues rigorous testing of its solid-state battery technology, the potential for industry-wide transformation becomes evident. With ongoing evaluations, the company aims to integrate this technology into future production vehicles, paving the way for a more sustainable automotive future.
