A groundbreaking project is underway in Saudi Arabia as The Line, a colossal mirrored structure, gradually takes shape. Stretching for a staggering 170 km (105 miles) across the desert, this city-sized skyscraper aims to accommodate a population of approximately 9 million people – roughly equivalent to that of New York City. Despite initial skepticism, work is advancing on this ambitious endeavor.

The dimensions of The Line are truly awe-inspiring. With a height of 500 meters (1,640 feet) and a mere width of 200 meters (656 feet), the structure poses significant practical challenges. Yet, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the de facto ruler, remains resolute in his desire to bring this vision to fruition.

Recent footage released by Neom, the company overseeing the project, showcases the immense scale of the endeavor. The video depicts the largest earthworks ever undertaken, with excavators and lines of trucks tirelessly preparing the foundation for the massive structure. The sheer magnitude of the operation is immense, with round-the-clock efforts to move millions of cubic meters of soil and water each week.

While The Line is the standout feature of the Neom giga-project, Saudi Arabia has embarked upon numerous other ambitious endeavors as it seeks to diversify its economy. From a cuboid skyscraper capable of accommodating 20 Empire State Buildings, to a pair of awe-inspiring skyscrapers and a cliff-hanging arena, the country is transitioning from an oil-based economy to an enticing tourist destination.

The completion of the first phase of The Line project is anticipated by 2030. However, the sheer scale of the undertaking suggests that there will be considerable work remaining beyond that point. Neom and its partners are committed to transforming this dream into reality, propelling Saudi Arabia into a future that harmonizes groundbreaking architecture, tourism, and economic diversity.

Sources indicate that The Line project has not been without controversy. Allegations of human rights violations and ecological concerns have cast a shadow over its development. As the project progresses, it is essential that these issues receive adequate attention, ensuring that the creation of The Line aligns with global standards and respects environmental sustainability and human welfare.

The Line’s emergence is destined to reshape the architectural landscape, putting Saudi Arabia at the forefront of visionary city planning. As this futuristic skyscraper city takes shape, the world watches in awe, anticipating the impact it will have on the region and the possibilities it presents for the future.
